About the project
This video was developed as the final work for the analog animation course I attended at Kunstschule Wien in 2020. The technique used is cut-out animation. The characters are drawn in pencil on simple photocopy paper and then cut out. The animated sequences are integrated with archival material, historical photographs and documentary footage.
The project originated from a desire to explore the identity conflict that characterizes my hometown, Trieste, which remained under Austrian rule for five centuries before becoming part of Italy after the First World War in 1918. The main characters, Salvatore and Angelo, represent two opposing sides, but also two seemingly irreconcilable parts of a contradictory and elusive identity.
The project was selected for the Best Austrian Animation Film Festival 2021 in the Student Works category.
